You can't reinvent the wheel. Much like the old saying, it is difficult to expand and build upon a musical genre that firmly established itself 30 years ago. For the past decade, The Black Crowes have managed to stay prominent in the rock music industry by not relying on creating a "new sound," but instead playing the southern rock-based music they love, and focusing on great hooks. Lions is the band's sixth studio album, and their third label (V2 Records) in the last three albums. Sadly, it would not be surprising if this was the band's last release. The great hooks that this band built itself on are simply not there. It's a difficult listen, being that the genre easily dated itself 15-20 years ago, and without a catchy single, the album, front to back, is, quite simply, boring. The Black Crowes: a great band that just ran out of hooks.
