Dave Navarro
Trust No One
Capitol Records
"I hate my life/I want the life you think I have." Everybody, all together now, 1-2-3: "POOR DAVE!" We should all be so UNlucky as to be a founding member of one of the greatest freaking bands of all time (Jane's Addiction), live in a sweet apartment overlooking Los Angeles with our own recording studio, and be able to scoop up girlies at will. Sounds good, right? Rumor has it he has even kicked that nasty dope habit. So what's with the poor, pathetic Dave routine? Maybe he's sad because he can't find anyone cool to rock with and thus has to do everything himself on his new record. This includes singing, something Dave has not attempted before outside of his own shower, presumably. The results are shaky to say the least. He can't decide if he wants to sound like the guy from STP or not, and his lyrics are stale and preposterous. He only really sounds like the Dave we know when he's tearing out solos on his guitar, and even those are few and far between. Instead he spends the entire record moping about "avoiding the angel" or dragging out tired minor chords that are supposed to make US sad. Dave deserves all the credit in the world for his work with Jane's, even his short stint with the Chili Peppers wasn't all bad, but the solo thing falls way short of interesting. It's scary, in a way. If you can't be happy with dashing good lucks, a rock star reputation, and a harem of supermodel-looking bimbos, what is there to strive towards? Poor Dave, indeed.
