Look Into the Eyeball
Virgin
Rating: 4.5 Flaming Goat Heads
If the eyes are the window to the soul, this is one eyeball you'll want to be looking into - this orb displays a beautiful and many-layered soul. The music on Byrne's new album is unique and lovely; the orchestral sounds dance with the tribal beats, and dip and twist with groove in a nearly showtune soundtrack. A theme between the songs begs to be found. Byrne's voice is mellow and alluring, although "U.B. Jesus" (Byrne's eyeball will narrow at this observation) has a distinctively Violent Femme-ish, pleasantly deranged vocal progression. "Like Humans Do" is a deceptively chipper track, which makes the next, "Broken Things," even more solemn - solemn, but appealing. Byrne's career and skewed outlook span 25 years, praise be. He's a wonder; a public enigma who straightforwardly reports that he doesn't always know what his songs mean or why he wrote them. His words describe Look Into the Eyeball best: "it includes the warm, lyrical sounds of strings and orchestral parts with groove music." Yes. That's a start. Check this disc out, there's something in it for every listener.-Kim Briggs
