DEFINITIVE JUX
DEFINITIVE JUX PRESENTS II
DEF JUX

Label compilations serve a couple of purposes. Not only do they give listeners the broad scope of the label's roster, but they provide a forum for the artists to contribute one hot track each - three or four minutes to speak their piece. Definitive Jux's second compilation release goes beyond that. Artists as diverse as Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic and The Weathermen let loose on this record - all bolstered by the gruff and grimy production work of Company Flow's El-P. Lyrical gems are tossed around liberally - Olio from Souls of Mischief provides what may be the cream of the crop on "Fulcrum," declaring that he would "choke the hell out a snitch like Slobodan Milosevic." Underground hip-hop can only flourish in this type of setting, on this kind of label. Bottom line: This Is Not Radio Friendly, These Are Not MTV Clones. This is how rap music began - turntables, microphones, and creativity.-AW
