EELS
SOULJACKER
DREAMWORKS
Sometimes, no matter how hard a band is trying, and no matter how noble their intentions, efforts still come up short. For some bands, the hurdle just keeps getting higher and higher. The Eels are one of these bands that receive enormous critical praise and can lay claim to an extremely rabid cult following, yet when it is time to just sit down and listen to the songs, flaws can be found everywhere. Souljacker is filled with great moments, but as an album, it lacks continuity and overall consistency. For every beautiful song ("Fresh Feeling," "Jungle Telegraph") there is an absurdity ("Dog Faced Boy," "Bus Stop Boxer"). Strangely, the best new tracks are found on the limited edition Rotten World EP that accompanies this release. -- AW
