ELBOW
ASLEEP IN THE BACK
V2 MUSIC
What happens when the next big thing isn't? Reading the press releases on Elbow, one expects to be lifted out of one's shoes and transported to another time and place upon hearing this record. The sad reality: this is just another band riding the latest U.K. to U.S. wave of integration. There's very little song structure or progression. Each tune picks a particular motif, or riff, and rides it out for three, four, sometimes five minutes, accomplishing very little. Various instruments are peppered throughout - cellos, woodwinds, horns, wybercrons (?) - yet they don't really add anything interesting to the excessively murky production and thoughtless arrangements. It must be hard to make music this dull with instruments of such infinite capabilities.-AW
