Rating: 5 Flaming Goat Heads
On the heels of his collaboration with B.B. King, Riding With the King, Eric Clapton is back with Reptile. The album shows by example Clapton's unique ability to mix music from different genres and timeframes into expressions that relay universal concerns and are truly timeless. "Got You On My Mind," "Come Back Baby," and "I Want A Little Girl" are old-fashioned rhythm and-especially-blues tracks, full of growled vocals and playful-to-painfully wrought guitar licks. The influence of the partnership with King that Clapton called 'a magical experience' is quite evident on those numbers. "Find Myself" has a '30s ragtime feel, complete with jaunty piano. A Motown sound can be detected in the harmonies of "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight." The rest of the songs are traditional, quality Eric Clapton, ranging from upbeat, hopeful romanticism to soulful, break-your-heart blues. The lead instrumental, "Reptile," holds shades of flamenco guitar, and the album closes with another instrumental, "Son & Sylvia," as soft and sweet as a goodnight kiss.-Kim Briggs
