Songs From An American Movie Vol. Two:
Good Time For A Bad Attitude

Capital
Rating: 2 Flaming Goat Heads

Vol. Two may be Everclear's heaviest record to date as far as guitar riffs and distortion levels, but the melodies and chord progressions are still ever-poppy in nature. Unfortunately, "Misery Whip" and the instrumental "Halloween Americana" are the only tracks out of 12 that stand out as something we haven't heard from Everclear at least twice already; some of the melodies (like in "Songs From An American Movie pt. 2") are exact copies of previous albums' vocal ideas. Alexakis' narrative lyric style is taken a little too far during "Babytalk," a dull biography of his friend Spike, and let's hope Alexakis is soon done with the phrase, "All I want to do is play guitar in a rock and roll band," which makes yet another appearance on the song "Rock Star." Though melodically redundant to previous works, Everclear gets an atta-boy for their almost-unique ability to make painful, downer songs sound happy, especially with music this heavy.-Cliff Frantz
