Ex-Girl
Back To The Mono Kero!

Rating: 4 Flaming Goat Heads
Three Japanese women make up this eccentric rock band, which is essentially a combination of a range of vocal styles and odd time signatures reminiscient of Shonen Knife and perhaps Le Tigre. This album, which happens to be Ex-Girl's fourth, begins with a three-way harmonic chant and winds into a somewhat complicated mass of irregular guitar riffing and operatic vocal harmonies backed by a solid driving drumbeat. A few other songs feature casiotone and synthesizers as well as time signatures arranged in six, seven, and nine. Structures are off the charts - completely unpredictable. Elements range from surf rock to a single measure of drum and bass. The only track on the album that seems even slightly normal is a cover of Devo's "Pop Muzik," and even that has its quirks. In fact, this album is so rooted in abnormality and unpredictability that it is difficult to describe with words alone. The best description of Ex-Girl's music would be obtained by simply hearing it. Weird. Good.
