Rating: 3.5 Flaming Goat Heads
Fear Factory's third concept album grapples with the inevitability of man's evolution from organic to electronic, lyrically and musically picking up where 1998's Obsolete left off. Still building on the band's pioneering fusion of death metal intensity with industrial electronic harshness, DigiMortal intelligently vents the band's bleak view of our modern, technology-driven society. The 11 songs are packed tight at around four minutes each, which strengthens their explosive impact. Hymn-like chorus vocals give relief to thick-necked verse screamings while futuristic themes drift in and out of the thick musical atmospheres. The staccato riffs in tunes like "No One" are made even more powerful by drummer Raymond Herrera's amazing footwork, which somehow manages to keep kick drums at pace with the quick guitar stunts. The Sabbath-y closer, "(Memory Imprints) Never End," brings this chapter of Fear Factory's tale to a speculatively pessimistic end.-Cliff Frantz
