Godsmack
Awake
Republic/Universal
Rating: 2 Flaming Goat Heads
Pouring another tall helping of the musical formula that concocted their triple-platinum debut, Godsmack's Awake is a 45-minute, 11-song collection of heavy-bottomed, staccato guitar riff-based music that shows little to no growth or adventure. The mood is again grim; lyrical requests to "get off of my back" or admission of being "sick of my life" are abundantly delivered over machinegun verses and predictable, droning choruses. The music to "Goin' Down," as well as
the lyrics (as inferred by the title), are especially primitive. Singer Sully Erna's growling tone, although unique enough, becomes tiring - his limited vocal range and dynamics don't offer the listener much variety. Excluding the title track, Awake lacks the vocal hooks that saved their self-titled debut from getting lost in the sea of bands who sound like they were constructed specifically to ride the Ozzfest stallion into the platinum winner's circle.Cliff Frantz
