 Marvelously produced and packaged, Silence Broken updates the recorded representation of the Kalamazoo three-piece Grotto North, a band significantly increasing in popularity and maturity over the past year. Ten tracks of consistently dark moods are built on tight riffing and fantastic instrument tones (especially the bass guitar), though the dryly mixed vocals often introduce a slightly happier flavor and rely too much on simple scale climbing/descending for melody creation. "New Year's Eve" may have been a poor choice for a vocal opener, but keep listening - as a whole, Silence Broken is an effort worth attention.
