Herbie Hancock
Future to Future
Transparent
Jazz music doesn’t seem to be quite as important as it was 50 or 60 years ago. New styles like Techno and Rap have become more vital forms of popular music, thus, the genre faces the need to expand. Hancock has always been on the cusp of this expansion. The late ‘70s found him incorporating hard funk into his music, and in the ‘80s he began experimenting with early HipHop trends like scratching and drum machines. This record is his venture into electronic music. The merging of guest electronic musicians such as DJ Rob Swift and Detroit Techno pioneer Carl Craig with noted Jazz legends like Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams makes for a very interesting listen. Herbie rarely disappoints.-AW
