Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade
Live Frogs - Set 1
Pawn Song Records
Rating: 4 Flaming Goat Heads
Listening to Live Frogs is like embarking on a musical safari, and being introduced to patternized species of sound never before heard by human ears. "Thela Hun Ginjeet (Heat in the Jungle)" seems foreign and somewhat abrasive upon first listen, but repeated playings expose the intricate blendings and iron out initial chaos. The songs are symphonic in length: the shortest - the bass-riddled "Riddles Are Abound Tonight," with distinctively Claypool-led vocals, is five minutes 58 seconds of jumped-up jazz. "Hendershot" starts with Claypool bowing out sounds that resemble whale songs, and then pops into a swelteringly hot mix. In "Running the Gauntlet," each of the band members' talents, introduced cleverly by Claypool, takes a successful turn in the spotlight. Claypool has collaborated with Charlie Hunter, Jerry Cantrell, Trey Anastasio, Henry Rollins, Stewart Copeland and Tom Waits. Not to mention little ol' Primus, and Oysterhead. It's been said the time is right for a new style of music. Might not that newness come from the amalgamation of the stand-out, brilliant members of existing bands? On this CD, Claypool and cohorts have certainly widened the opening of that door of possibility.-Kim Briggs
