LOVAGE
MUSIC TO MAKE LOVE TO YOUR OLD LADY BY
TOMMY BOY
Hip-hop comedy is quickly becoming the latest spin-off in the world of rap music. When Prince Paul and Dan the Automator released Handsome Boy Modeling School a few years ago, they discovered a surefire blueprint for success that mixes conceptual elements, hard hitting beats, obscure guest appearances and hilarious samples. That album's appeal, combined with his crossover success as the brains behind Gorillaz, has bought Dan the Automator the freedom to do whatever he wants. Lucky us! His latest project is Lovage - which, for your information, is an herb that is said to reduce flatulence and relieve abdominal pains due to gastrointestinal gas. Lovage the band includes ex-Faith No More guy Mike Patton (!), Canadian turntable phenom Kid Koala, and Elysian Fields crooner Jennifer Charles. The idea, as the title implies, is to get your old lady in the mood. Thus, we get a number of slowed-down Kid Koala concoctions enhanced by Charles and Patton's respective bedroom voices ("Use me like Listerine/keep your breath fresh"), and above all, the Automator - who has officially become the most sought after producer in hip-hop - laying down some of the smoothest tracks since the Isley Brothers. Best moment: Afrika Bambaataa's mad funny sex-ed lecture, in which he advises us to wash our ass, brush our breath with our teeth, and wear non-funky socks.-AW
