Matthew Good Band
Beautiful Midnight
Universal
Rating: 4.5 Flaming Goat Heads
More artistic than pop, Matthew Good Band mixes it up pretty nicely - floating soft keyboards and wandering guitar leads over a mid-tempo chord progression in the opener, "Giant," kicking up to double-time for the chorus of "Hello Time Bomb" and acoustically easing into full verse on "Strange Days." Stylistically, the band comes close to Our Lady Peace in their songs' thick musical density and ability to throw the listener for an occasional loop with notes that aren't webbed into the major scale safety net. The outro to "Born To Kill" swirls into a highly orchestrated eddy of lush keyboards and violent guitar that sucks in even the most casual listener. Lyrically, Beautiful Midnight has a good deal to offer, badgering society's materialistic fixation, dead end spirituality and other targets requiring a more focused aim than typical pop lyrics. Matthew Good Band would be an excellent choice for an embarrassed pop music lover who knows he/she should be listening to more interesting music but is afraid to dive into anything deeper - the entire disc might be a bit tough to get through during the first few spins, but once the listener latches on, they won't let go.-Cliff Frantz
