Rating: 5 Flaming Goat Heads
Already considered experimental or abstract musicians, Germany's Mouse on Mars continue to push the envelope, creating an all-encompassing sound that challenges but doesn't alienate the listener. Intriguing, abrasive, funky and delightfully subtle, Idiology takes Mouse on Mars even further towards what one can only assume will be a wonderfully realized musical vision. Every record builds upon the previous release, and adds a new ingredient to the stew. Last year's Niun Niggung saw the introduction of horns and strings, live, sampled and looped into the most bounceadelic and truly joyful record of their short career. Idiology retains a bit of that jazziness, but the real story is the use of actual vocals, a considerable step for what was previously an instrumental group. The opening track, "actionist respoke" sounds like they let that little Aphex Twin demon loose in the studio and after a bit of convincing, let him sing lead vocals. Rumor indicates it is actually their part-time drummer Dodo who does the singing, if you can call it that, but it fits somehow. Other tracks on the new record are characteristically gorgeous, particularly track two, "subsequence" and the closer, "fantastic analysis," which is about as close as a listener can come to finding religion through audio. This music is of an experimental nature - there are some tracks that are kind of hard to groove to - but the overall effect is very rewarding.-Andrew Watson
