Nickelback
Silver Side Up
Roadrunner
Let’s start with the positive statements. Nickelback is pure ‘now radio.’ The band stands up next to Bush and Creed (hey, in some circles, that’s a positive statement). "How You Remind Me" is a rich and lovely song that will be hummed absentmindedly by the masses for years to come. "Woke Up This Morning" may follow in its footsteps. The vocals are manly and sincere. And last, these guys are comparatively young; they have many years ahead of them to develop a sound that doesn’t sound like everybody else. "Never Again" takes on the subject of spousal abuse, much the way that Aerosmith’s "Janie’s Got A Gun" took on the subject of sexually abused children. But Nickelback couldn’t quite nail down the formula - writing an angry song about spousal abuse seems to defeat the point. "Money Bought," "Where Do I Hide," etc., are very much chips off the same block. Emotive lyrics and driving guitars - not bad, just so similar that if you aren’t paying attention, you may not notice when one track ends and another begins. And "Hollywood" and "Good Times Gone" are real stinkers. The disc completes a full cycle in 39 minutes and six seconds. Only 10 songs - one could either feel cheated, or relieved, depending upon one’s mood and musical orientation. Personally - I want my nickels back.-Kim Frantz
