PRINCE
THE RAINBOW CHILDREN
NPG RECORDS
Halleluja! After nearly a decade of complacency and mind-boggling personal decisions, Prince has decided to play music again. After Sign O' The Times solidified Prince's status as the preeminent musical genius of his time, the Stevie Wonder of the 80s, if you will, his career took awkward turns as he released a series of lesser albums that eventually booted him from the public eye. He has returned. Rainbow is a dizzying collection of funky jazz numbers that remind listeners why they started listening to this little freak in the first place. "1+1+1=3" is the meanest Prince groove since "Erotic City." Tracks like "Family Name" and "Everlasting Now" recall his vintage stuff - guitar-based funk with effortless melodic structure. Prince indeed benefits from a dimmer spotlight.-AW
