Rammstein
Mutter
Republic/Universal
Rating: 4 Flaming Goat Heads
Already carrying the stigma of having been the favored listening material of the teenage killers at Columbine High School, Rammstein's march toward international infamy continues with the studio follow-up to 1996' platinum album, Sehnsucht. The simple yet angry guitar lines on Mutter act merely as servants to the band's ever-ominous keyboard lines, which continue to provide Rammstein's most appealing moments, with the exception of the killer staccato pickup-switching guitar riff in "Adios." Vocalist Till Lindermann's foreign enunciation doesn't require English translation; his entrancing, rolling tongue speaks the international languages of gloom, anger and hostility, which are easily absorbed. The title track mixes wild key changes with spatial rests and gothic, ambient keyboard melodies, while the vocal call and response of "Spieluhr" is forced to mix with the delicate keyboards that line a full-bore industrial stomp - a combination showcasing Rammstein's uncommon willingness to mix electronica into metal/goth interpretations.-Cliff Frantz
