ROBERT BRADLEY'S BLACKWATER SURPRISE
NEW GROUND
VANGUARD
These are the guys who, in the process of auditioning lead singers, discovered Robert Bradley - an old blind man with a gravelly baritone. The band's first record scored a minor hit, and they were heralded for their "humanitarian" approach to making music. It's a good story - an after-school special just waiting to be made - but unfortunately, the music isn't all that noteworthy. Bradley is good; his voice recalls the old blues greats - Muddy Waters, Albert King and the like. The Blackwater Surprise, though, needs to reevaluate itself. Our world is jam packed with way-too-well-produced four-chord blues bands. A bit of restraint and a little more substance would better complement a singer of Bradley's capabilities.-AW
