Whole New You
Columbia
Rating: 2.5 Flaming Goat Heads

Though more lyrically delicate than a sedated children's book author, Whole New You's combination of passionate and memorable choruses with Colvin's just-right vocal dynamics stirs up vibes quite similar to those found on her double Grammy-winning 1996 effort, A Few Small Repairs; "Anywhere You Go" and "Whole New You" make the listener want to hand out hugs to drug addicts and feed steak to the homeless. The male vocal accompaniments on "Boneyard" and "Roger Wilco" add a minor set of balls to the project, but mostly this album is an easy listening backdrop for candlelit nights when the DVD player is broken or the significant other wants to talk about your relationship's lack of forward progress. Whole New You boasts some intense instrumental accompaniment at times, but there are too many forced "less is more" areas that rob the songs of their full potential. Songs like "Nothing Like You" and "Mr. Levon" are stagnant Jewel-esque lulls that creep straight forward without even trying to throw a shoulder fake, and which considerably decrease the shelf-life of this barely above average effort.-Cliff Frantz
