Building on the Garbage blueprint, SRC is the female-fronted brainchild of multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Jason Slater, a former member of Third Eye Blind who quit when Blind's singer started moving the band in its now famous, completely gay direction. Slater's music attempts a twisted merging of pop and industrial; his singer, the overwhelmingly sexy Tobey Torres, is a cross between your girlfriend and your mom - naughty and excitable, yet soothing and comforting. Torres' bipolar vocal presence adds hyper-dynamics to the music's fairly drastic atmospheric shifts on "Breed" and "More Than Love," where she flip-flops between whisper and scream to complement the moods. "Casualty" and the remake of the completely unknown T-Ride song "You And Your Friend" are less wild; Torres remains breathy throughout to add tension as the music introduces and retracts only slightly harsher themes. Wicked covers of the Cure's "Lovesong" and the Smiths' "How Soon Is Now?" provide landmarks to guide the album's somewhat confusing journey; the pop/industrial epoxy doesn't always coagulate - too much pop here, too much industrial there - which, track to track, can leave the listener wondering if somebody switched discs on them.-Cliff Frantz
