The Sound of Urchin
The Sound of Urchin
RCA
Rating: 4 Flaming Goat Heads

Who knew urchin were so musically inclined? The Sound of Urchin is quite a stretch for the Eve 6-loving RCA boys - musically adventurous while lyrically humorous, Urchin's sound is a weird pool of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus, Henry Rollins, Elvis Costello and U2, with a Baby Ruth bar thrown into the deep end for comedic value. While this four-piece's five-song EP isn't Dream Theater, the arrangements are complex enough to confirm their musical capability - with that established, the Urchin members grant themselves the right to have fun. "Cherry Mountain (Herdin' The Sheep)" begins with a white-man rap about the finer points of sheep herding before a simple but infectious staccato guitar riff starts the whole band bouncing into odd directions, finally coagulating with the unison yelling of an anthem-like vocal line. Other tunes like "Quiz Show Spy" and "Fearless Vampire Killers" never fail to amuse while bassist Roast Beef The Cowboy lays fat grooves which can induce anything from a slightly bopping head to a full-body writhe.-Cliff Frantz
