SOUTH
FROM HERE ON IN
KINETIC RECORDS
Here is yet another promising young U.K. band whose record takes years to make it to the States. South combines Mowax/Unkle guy James Lavelle's beat-heavy production with what once might have been a pretty good Stone Roses cover band. Ian Brown should demand royalties on this. Despite a few quality tracks ("Paint The Silence," "Run On Time," "Here On In") the album falls under the weight of confliction - it can't decide which direction to pursue aesthetically. The few good songs are lost amongst instrumental DJ Shadow rip-offs and unnecessary "reprise" tracks. There is an excellent five-song maxi-single buried in here, but it doesn't matter anyway - by the time anything good from the U.K. gets over here, its moment has already passed.-AW
