Let It Come Down
Arista
With Spiritualized’s Let it Come Down, former Spaceman3 guy Jason Pierce takes a bit of a departure musically, but not lyrically. There are still those cringe-inducing phrases: "Nothing hurts you like the pain of someone you love" or "The only time I’m drink and drug free/ is when I get my drinks and drugs for free." Fortunately, Pierce recently fell in love with symphonic sound. Horns collide with strings as tympanis and cymbals crash through sweeping crescendos, all to great effect. "Don’t Just Do Something," the standout track, builds slowly and beautifully to a powerful conclusion. It’s one of the only times Pierce’s woe-is-me lyrics don’t detract from the music, which is often magnificent.-AW
