Break the Cycle
Flip Records
Rating: 3.5 Flaming Goat Heads

Finally, music for masochists! Staind's third effort finds Aaron Lewis & the gang just as self-loathing and run-down as ever, but isn't that what we've always loved about them? Break the Cycle is filled with such familiar themes as "the world hates me," "nobody understands me," "I hate you" and "we hate the world," but this is not necessarily a bad thing. For instance, Staind fans will enjoy the Durst-free studio version of "Outside" (originally released on the Family Values '99 Live disc). Not only is the track done with the entire band, but the LACK of Durst's interjections (such as "this is the real mutha fuckin' deal y'all" and "I'm feelin' those lighters") is what makes the studio version so much more enjoyable. The disc features many other tearjerkers, including "Epiphany" and "It's Been Awhile," but some of the strongest moments are during the heavier tracks. Unfortunately most of them are audio Xeroxes of songs found on their sophomore album Dysfunction. Alas, there is hope! "Can't Believe" breaks the redundancy with a balls-out tantrum that is quite reminiscent of old-school Deftones, but then again, it's only one track. Shortly and sweetly: Break the Cycle is more of the same, but Staind fans won't be disappointed.-C. Cantle
