Sunna
One Minute Science
Astralwerks/Virgin
Rating: 4 Flaming Goat Heads

"I'm Not Trading," the opening track of Sunna's debut album, implies that Sunna is just another hate-filled cross between NIN and Orgy, but that pigeonholing loses water from track two on, when Sunna begins to sound more like a heavier Radiohead. The band mostly relies on guitars to lead the way in developing mood and movement, while drums are used either very creatively or not at all. The Sieg Heil! stomp of "Power Struggle" is balanced against more delicate pieces like "O.D.," with stunning vocal melodies delivering fair to partly cloudy lyrics that don't induce much ponder in the listener, but are adequate. Songs like "I Miss," a plea to be physically restrained from hurting others, and "Too Much," a drug-daze moment of clarity, are anti-radio, artsy pieces that parallel Radiohead in structure (or the appearance of a lack of) and feature electronic loops that are never too overbearing or distracting. The album's highlight is "O.D.," which goes from fragile to forceful between verse and chorus in a manner that makes the listener introduce fist to desk when the chorus finally kicks in.
