Tori Amos
Strange Little Girls
Atlantic
The concept is intriguing - an entire album full of male oriented songs about women sung by a woman who hates men - introspective diatribe on male/female relations or simply a way to release an entire album without writing a single piece of music? Actually, some of these covers work; her hollow rendition of "Enjoy the Silence" is much creepier than Depeche Mode could have ever made it, and Tori doing Slayer’s "Raining Blood" is certainly worth hearing. Surprisingly, all the hype over her cover of Eminem’s "97 Bonnie and Clyde" seems unwarranted - some songs can’t get any more disturbing no matter how you dress them up.-AW
