Train
Drops Of Jupiter
Columbia
Rating: 2 Flaming Goat Heads

Train's second release is more of a back rub than an ass kick - the band's tendency toward moderate to slow tempos and spacey, delicate atmospheres offer the band leeway for emotional crescendos that don't pop through the recording like they (assumedly) will live. The opener, "She's On Fire," gives a good indication of what's to follow - well-crafted songs, thoughtful arrangements and the feeling that Train is holding back their true dynamic power until they get a chance to kick it up a notch in a live setting. Sadly, Drops of Jupiter's title track/lead single is the only song on the album with the hook power capable of replicating the widespread popularity of 1999's "Meet Virginia," which propelled Train's debut past platinum. There are some catchy melodies and singer Pat Monahan's performances are sharp, but the back to back mid-tempo tunes bog this disc down - around track six, a boredom sets in that makes the CD a hard one to finish. Buyers expecting 11 songs as gratifyingly unique as the single, "Drops Of Jupiter," will be disappointed.-Cliff Frantz
