This Traverse City three-piece’s almost-punkish ambient guitars and wandering jazz baselines set an interesting base for singer Tim Callaghan’s vocals which, and there is just no other way to put this, sound exactly like David Bowie. While perhaps many would dream of being mentioned in the same sentence with Bowie, this distracting vocal quality overshadows Volo’s songwriting and energy, and creates doubt about the band’s potential for mass popularity. For the most part, Volo uses its guitar, bass, drums and occasional keys wisely, but some of the mood development is not taken far enough, such as in the bridge of "Facade."
