Admit it, you like these guys. Maybe a lot, maybe a little, but deep down, you like these guys. Coming up in the flannel-soaked early '90s, Weezer was like a taste of something totally different. Hearts pinned firmly to their sleeves, they produced a shamelessly simple pop/punk classic debut, followed it up with a slightly darker but equally impressive follow-up and then disappeared from sight for close to six years. My first response upon hearing the new record was something along the lines of, "Damn, six years and this is it?" Seriously folks, this record clocks in at around thirty minutes of new music. It almost sounds like a sampler, short bits of what will eventually be the real record. What is here, however, is pretty good. Never short on hooks, lead singer/guitarist Rivers Cuomo unveils a couple nice ones on the new record, most notably on "Photograph" and "Smile." What's surprising, though, is the lack of lyrical depth. What made the first record so effective was its sense of honesty. You could almost see this little guy scribbling into his little notebook on the bus home from school - "In the garage/ I feel safe/No one hears me sing this song... etc., etc." This record is kind of generic lyrically, as if they wrote the words at the last second to fit the jams, which for most bands is not a problem. Weezer puts the vocals in the forefront, mic'd way up, so you are forced to hear them. Unfortunately, this record relies a little too much on the "oh babys" "whoa-whoas" and "ooh-wee'oohs." Look for Weezer to come back for real on their next album, now that they know people are still listening.
