Part II.
More of internationally renowned sound engineer Dick Bill's pro chops can be read in his masterpiece text, Never Get Off The Bus.
It's no coincidence that "db" stands for both decibel and Dick Bill - as a legendary road veteran that's been tweaking his knobs since he was old enough to mix a drink, Dick Bill practically invented monitor feedback. Learn the ins and outs of Dick's work by reading his list of tips below.

Dick Tips

  1. Musicians are artistic people who often use poetic metaphors to communicate their true feelings. Keep this in mind when a performer says he can't hear the monitors - he's probably just making some enlightened statement about his battle with personal demons, and should be ignored.

  2. When dialing in a room, it is widely held that crossover settings are important in one way or another.

  3. When mixing in stereo, ensure "sonic fairness" by panning instruments left to right in alphabetical order.

  4. When sound checking, remind the guitarist that it's imperative his stage volume be at least 10 times louder than the vocal monitors. He'll be guaranteed to tell everyone he knows that you are the best soundman ever.

  5. You can save a ton on sound reinforcement overhead by purchasing all necessary PA gear at Home Depot by the square foot.
