Love or Temptation
Grand Rapids, Mich.
On their latest release, breakout duo Alexis bends the rules on what is – or isn’t – a guilty pleasure of the dance-floor. Baiting listeners with brooding build-ups, hypnotic hooks and coy come-ons, vocalist Matthew Forbush’s distinct low register breathes a mixture of heat and distance into the group’s seductive synth-pop (on dazzling gems like “Kiss and Tell”) while keyboardist Dan Hurst fills the group’s mid-tempo grooves with an array of vintage drum machines and thick, layered melodies. Those unfamiliar with their sound will find similarities to several ‘80s artists – or recent acts like M83 or Neon Indian – but on this, their third set, Alexis has come into their own, sounding perfectly pristine even if they’re looking to get down and dirty. – Eric Mitts
