Mail Order Monsters
Grand Rapids, Mich.
Are you feeling nostalgic for the forgotten 8-bit soundtracks to the video games of your youth? Look no further than local trio Mail Order Monsters. The instrumental outfit of Rich Vogel, John Harrell and Angela Nielsen take their name from a Commodore 64 game, and employ the vintage computer in their assortment of retro sounds. Other chiptune acts come across as gimmicky or entirely ironic, but the talent vested into the serious synth work here proves just how committed they are to breathing new life into these lost electronic sounds. That live-playing element, with layers upon layers of keyboards, makes this release far more compelling than it might seem like on the surface, and their fantastic videos (viewable at mailordermonsters64.com) seal the deal. — Eric Mitts
