Boris New Album

If New Album be your first introduction to Japanese art/metal/androids Boris, you have every right to approach cautiously. This is, after all, a wildly unpredictable and easily excitable cartoon metal drone trio. They offer no reference point. New Album crushes the world of pop music as only Boris can, via pummeling riffs, NES breakdowns and candy-coated vocalistics. “Flare” opens the record in a delirious, screaming spiral, wallowing gleefully through fiery guitar leads and Neal Peart-like drum worship. From there it blasts off into parts known and unknown, pausing rarely for breath. I count myself among the unlearned when it comes to these misfits, but the light is beginning to dawn on me.
